We have started harvesting our delicious organic macadamia nuts. They are actually "organic-by-default", because we have not used any chemicals over the past 3 years. Many of the macadamia trees have died and/or are dying (they were planted about 15 years ago), but we are better able to identify the live trees and those that are still producing nuts. Actually, producing organic macadamia is difficult for many reasons, but notably during harvest. In the past, herbicides would be sprayed around the trees so that nuts falling on the ground could be seen and picked (macadamia nuts drop when "ripe"). Well, we are not using herbicides, so the pickers need to clear areas under the trees with machetes. Clearly, this process is very labor-intensive and expensive ... BUT ... we have organic macadamia nuts. Hopefully we will be able to continue to harvest nuts and clean up around the good trees and cut down the dead trees. Then we can start on a reforestation project, with a combination of coffee and fruit trees, and trees for wood, and all kinds of food/forage crops. Also, we need to clean up around the young trees that were planted about 5 years ago, when the farm was purchased. They are starting to produce nuts. So, Macadamia Organica La Perla .... we wish you all the best, because we have the very best macadamia nuts Pura Vida. Dr. Paulo
